On a new episode of WTF With Marc Maron, Ariana Grande voiced her support for mandatory therapy in record label contracts for young stars. The pop star/actress cited her own experiences with intense public scrutiny and mental health challenges in her early days in the entertainment industry, saying those companies “should be responsible for protecting” their signees and therapy should be a “non-negotiable” part of record label contracts for emerging artists. “I was 19 when all of that nonsense started happening to me,” Grande reflected. “It started when I was so young. There was just no limit. To be an artist, you are a vulnerable person with your heart on your sleeve. So the same person who is meant to do art is the exact same person who is not meant to deal with that s–t.” Grande’s comments echo recent discussions within the industry, including Chappell Roan‘s Grammy speech advocating for fair treatment and healthcare for artists.
